This passage clearly points forward to Christ. In a covenant, both parties would pass between the animal parts, declaring an oath that failure on their part to keep the covenant should result in death. In this case, God put Abram to sleep and declared that He would subject Himself to death should either He or Abram and his descendants fail to keep the covenant. God, being faithful, kept His part of the covenant and then also subjected Himself to death for Abram and his descendant's covenantal unfaithfulness.
